The story behind the creation of Spinal Man is near and dear to my heart. The following is my story of the development and meaning of this important figure. I remember the day like it was yesterday. I came home from my first practice in Moline, Illinois, (I had graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic only 4 months earlier), and was stressed from the start of my professional career and the trials and tribulations of opening a new chiropractic office.
Soon after graduating, I enrolled in the first Pediatrics Diplomate program offered at my alma mater, Palmer College. I have always had a special interest in children and the benefits of chiropractic care, so I figured it was a great opportunity to learn more about chiropractic pediatrics. In addition, my daughter Brianna was just 2 years old at the time, so my continuing education helped me apply firsthand the knowledge I was gaining from class. With Pediatrics and starting practice on full speed ahead in my mind at the time, what I observed that night would change my life forever.
I came home exhausted and stressed and plopped down on the couch, as I often did in those days. I noticed Brianna playing with her dolls, (as many little girls her age do), and what made this instance different from many others was the scenario being played out in her mind as she played this night. You see, this particular doll, which was placed by Brianna in a miniature swing, was evidently ‘sick.’ Oh, there was no doubt about it, this doll was sick. |
